Description
Records of the History Department contain correspondence, meeting minutes,teaching materials, class notes and grade books documenting undergraduate instruction in history at Dartmouth College. The collection also contains correspondence relating to the recruitment of faculty, planning for a reunion of systems programmers sponsored in part by the department, and newsletters from the student strike in 1970. Collection also includes a version of the department’s website from before 2016, when the retired version was crawled by Rauner Special Collections.

Abstract
Instruction in history began at the College in 1782, although instruction in history does not reappear in the catalog until 1841, with the appointment of professor William Cogwell. Currently, the department forms part of the Division of Social Sciences, and supports a foreign study program in London. The History Department offers a Standard Major, a Modified Major, an Honors Major, and a Minor, and offers over 70 courses.
