The papers of David C. Nutt contain materials related primarily to his professional life as an oceanographic researcher and teacher. They include field reports, data, charts, correspondence, academic manuscripts, writings, nautical charts, maps, oceanographic and hydrographic logs, aerial photographs and other research materials documenting his many expeditions on the Blue Dolphin and other vessels to Labrador, Greenland and the Arctic Region. Of particular significance are his bathythermograph records of the North Atlantic waters in the 1940's and 1950's and his research of ice islands and their gas content. The records include bathythermograph slides and tools, fathometer recording charts and temperature and salinity graphs. Supporting his own research materials is a large selection of academic reprints and publications as well as correspondence, proposals, and reports relating to his work for and with the Arctic Institute of North America, the Arctic Studies Program at Dartmouth College and other polar societies. Teaching materials include course outlines, lecture notes, and student papers. The collection also includes course outlines, class notes, academic papers, and examinations chronicling his own undergraduate education at Dartmouth College and at the Local Defense School at the Boston Navy Yard as well as other naval institutions. In addition, the collection contains correspondence, official records and reports documenting his service in the US Navy during WWII and as a member of the New Hampshire legislature in the 1970's.
