Description

The papers of Sinclair Weeks consist of professional correspondence, tax documents, speeches, budget requests, meeting minutes, political surveys, financial and fundraising information, diaries, subject files, newsletters, flyers, memoranda, brochures, annual reports, writings, diplomas and certificates, scrapbooks, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and printed material. The papers document Sinclair Weeks' professional life, including his involvement in the Mt. Prospect Company, the Harvard Board of Overseers, the Wendell Willkie campaign, his appointment as mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, his unsuccessful bid for the United States Senate in 1936, and his short term as a U.S. Senator in 1944. Also documented is his involvement in the Republican Party, including material related to the Eisenhower campaign of 1952 and the Nixon campaign of 1960. The bulk of the material, however, covers his tenure as Secretary of Commerce from 1953-1958. Other papers included in the collection relate to Weeks' position as an executive for the United-Carr Fastener Corporation and the Reed and Barton Corporation. Personal correspondence includes letters from his first wife Beatrice Dowse, his parents John Wingate and Martha A. Weeks, various children, grandchildren and other relatives. Photographs document Weeks' childhood, his service in World War I, his personal life and his public life as Secretary of Commerce. Of note are Weeks' diaries chronicling the years 1929-1954. Scrapbooks containing clippings and some material related to his wife Jane T. Weeks are also included. Selected correspondents include, Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower, Sherman Adams, Harold Stassen, Richard Nixon, Wendell Willkie, Styles Bridges, Henry Cabot Lodge, Christian A. Herter, Herbert Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover, B.E. Hutchinson, Clarence Budington Kelland, Carlton G. Ketchum and Leverett Saltonstall.

Abstract

Sinclair Weeks (1893-1972), businessman and politician. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks and other material related to his activities as mayor of Newton, Ma., as a member of the Republican Party, as a United States senator, and as Secretary of Commerce in the Eisenhower Administration. Papers related to his business career and his work at Barton & Reed and United-Carr Fastener Corporation, as well as financial papers and personal letters are also included. Correspondents include Sherman Adams, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John Wingate Weeks, Richard Nixon, Wendell Willkie and Herbert Hoover.
