Hanover Water Works Company
Biography
The Hanover Water Works company began because two disastrous fires in the 1880s raised awareness for the need of fire protection for the College and town. The company was organized on August 1, 1893 and it issued stock which was held jointly by the College and the town. Work was completed on the first system (consisting of a reservoir, dam, gate house, spillway, and pipelines) by November 1, 1893. The company had purchased over 1200 acres of the watershed by 1912 and added an additional reservoir by 1924 and a third in 1962.

The collection contains accounts and balance sheets, cancelled checks, contracts, field notebooks, property deeds, photographs, inventories, equipment depreciation, reports, correspondence and memoranda. Also includes two volumes of maps showing water lines, hydrants, streets, buildings, property lines, and other information, for the village of Hanover and Dartmouth College.
