Biography

Newton Timothy Hartshorn was born in Amherst, New Hampshire in 1842. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and became a popular portraitist both in this country and in Europe. He is best known for his portraits of President Ulysses S. Grant whom he painted in 1872.
