Biography

William Powers Kelly, Dartmouth class of 1886, was born in Troy, Ohio on December 30, 1865 to David Kelly and Ellen Powers. Kelly, known as "Biff" while at Dartmouth, was the art editor of the '86 Aegis, sang in the Glee Club and Quartette, was commissary of the Swett Club, and was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He married Lillian M. Lee on July 9, 1896. They had two children, David (Rutgers '20, Harvard Law '26) and Dr. William P. Jr. (Dartmouth '23, Columbia Med '26). Kelly had a long career as an educator, serving as principal of Northwood Academy, teacher at Worcester Academy and South Hadley High School, superintendent in Hudson, MA, Attleboro, MA, and Meriden, CT, and lastly headmaster of Rutgers Preparatory School. He was an active member of the Class of 1886, serving variously as secretary, class agent, and treasurer after graduation. He died on March 27, 1953 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Abstract

This collection is comprised of the personal papers of William P. Kelly and his father, Captain David Kelly, along with many letters from other Kelly family members. Highlights of the collection include letters written to Captain David Kelly while serving during the Civil War, recommendation letters for William P. Kelly’s entrance to Dartmouth College, and letters between William P. Kelly and Lillian M. Lee (married in 1896).
