Biography
Brackett family members represented in this collection are: Mary Weeks Brackett (1744-1814) and her sons Joseph Warren Brackett (1775-1826), Dartmouth College Class of 1800 and James Brackett (1782-1852) Dartmouth College Class of 1805, both lawyers, as well as their sister Martha Brackett (b. 1771) and brother Adino Nye Brackett (1777-1847). James Brackett married Maria Elizabeth (Eliza) Ely and they had seven sons and one daughter: John Ely Brackett, Joseph Warren Brackett, James Wolfe Brackett, Lyman Stebbins Brackett, William Brackett, Albert Gallatin Brackett, Charles Brackett (1825-1863), and Elizabeth Brackett Cary. Charles Brackett became a surgeon and joined the First Indiana Cavalry in August 1861 and the Ninth Illinois Cavalry in 1862. His younger brother Albert was colonel in the Ninth and two of his brothers, Joseph and James, were officers. Charles stayed with the Ninth and moved with them through Missouri and into Arkansas. He died on February 20, 1863. His death was caused by overwork and the exposure to the elements during a particularly cold winter. Charles had married Margaret in the 1850s and they had six children, Louisa, Lyman, Rose Anna, Mary and Charles W.
