Biography
George B. Munroe was born on January 5, 1922 in Joliet, Illinois. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1943 and entered the Navy, where he served until 1946. He earned his LL.B from Harvard Law School in 1949, and was admitted to the New York Bar. He was associated with the firm of Cravath, Swain & Moore in New York City for several years. A Rhodes Scholar, Munroe received a B.A. from Christ Church, Oxford University, England in 1951, and later, in 1956, an MA degree. From 1951-1953 he worked as an attorney in the office of the General Counsel of the United States High Commissioner in Bonn, West Germany, and from 1953-1954 was a justice of the United States Court for Restitution Appeals of the Allied High Commission for Germany, at Nuremberg. Returning to New York, Munroe practiced law in the firm of Debevoise, Plimpton & McLean from 1954-1958, when he joined Phelps Dodge Corporation. He was appointed Vice President in 1962 and rose to the Presidency of the Corporation in 1966, Chief Executive Officer in 1969, and Chairman of the Board in 1975. He resumed the presidency in 1980, and remained in that position until his retirement from Phelps Dodge in 1987. As a member of the class of 1943, Munroe has been a class agent (1959-1964), receiving the Hood Trophy in 1964 for his efforts, Class Chairman (1964-1968), a member of the Alumni Council and the Class Executive Committee, and in 1977 was elected to the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees. He was chosen to be Chairman of the Board in 1988. He retired from the Board in 1991.

The collection consists of books, clippings, correspondence, articles, reports, pamphlets, papers, speeches, programs and other items documenting his work as as an alum and his involvement with the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees, as well as his work with the US High Commission in Germany in the 1950s.
