Biography

Walter Whitman Jr. (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. He is considered one of the most influential poets in American history. Whitman incorporated both transcendentalism and realism in his writings and is often called the father of free verse.

Three-page letter from Walt Whitman in Washington, DC to James Speed, telling him that he is sending a copy of "leaves of Grass" and activities in the office of attorney general. There has been a rush of Confederate generals to the office.

Scope and Contents

Two-page letter from Walt Whitman in Washington to Ralph Waldo Emerson, telling him that he has decided to offer the enclosed piece to the Atlantic before sending it abroad. Wishes Mr. Emerson to take it to Mr. Fields. [The piece presumably was "Proud Music of the Sea Storm" - Atlantic F'69]. Enlcosure lacking.
