Jefferson Brown was assistant engineer on the "Alliance," one of two relief expeditions outfitted and sent by the American government in search of G.W. Delong's 1879 "Jeannette" expedition.

Abstract
Thirty sketches of the Arctic regions prepared by Brown when he was Assistant Engineer on the USS Alliance while on a cruise in search of the Jeannette in 1881. Includes copies of service records, description and attribution of the sketches, and a copy of the relevant issues of the journal "Our continent" in which the sketches were published
