Biography

Dr. Laws was a surgeon in the United States Navy. He was the senior medical officer on the Harstene Relief Expedition which was in search of Dr. Elisha Kent Kane, an explorer who was lost while a member of the Second Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin.

Abstract

James Laws (1827-1905), physician. Collection includes Dr. James Laws' diary, which he kept while being a member of the Harstene Relief Expedition in search of Dr. Elisha Kent Kane on board the ship "Release." Reports for the "Arctic," companion ship of the "Release," as well as some correspondence, some of his Navy commissions and newspaper clippings are also included.
