Biography

Ransom F Sargent was born March 16, 1837, in New London, N.H., to Seth Freeman Sargent and Polly Sargent (nee Adams). He married Emily Maria French (1841-1923) on August 12, 1862, before enlisting in the Union army a few weeks later. He served as the Fife Major in Co. F, 11th New Hampshire Regiment until the conclusion of the war in the summer of 1865. Ransom and Maria had one daughter, Alice F. Spiller (nee Sargent) (1879-1926), and one son, Edgar F. (1866-?). Ransom played with the New London cadet band, and was known as a skilled woodsman, hunter, and fisherman. Ransom died January 17, 1924 in New London, where he is buried with Maria.

Abstract

Ransom F. Sargent (1837-1924), Fife Major of the 11th N.H. regiment, Co F. The collection consists largely of the Civil War correspondence between Ransom and his wife, Maria, with some correspondence between Ransom and his parents, miscellaneous documents, Ransom's war diaries, and typescript of the letters and diaries.
