Description

This collection mostly includes Civil War correspondence between Ransom F. Sargent and his wife Maria, with some letters between Ransom and his parents. Also included are assorted documents and letters related to the family. Sargent's Civil War letters detail camp life, with some reflections and observations on the development of the war. Specific battles Sargent describes include the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Siege of Vicksburg, and the Siege of Petersburg (including the Battle of the Crater). Ransom and Maria's letters also detail a great deal of news about New London and the other soldiers from New London. The collection also includes three diary volumes, 1863-1865, with daily notations on weather and troop movements, as well as typescript of the diaries and letters.
