Breyfogle, Joshua D., 1806-1868

 

Biography

Joshua Breyfogle wa born in Lockport, New York in 1806. He moved to Deleware, Ohio some time before 1849. He was a tailor. He is known to have enlisted in the 4th Ohio Infantry for service in the Civil War. Like his 1849 Gold Rush trip, he recorded his military service with a daily journal and many letters home. Joshua was discharged from the 4th in November 1862 but he reenlisted in the 10th and served in the entire war. In 1868, Breyfogle killed himself.

Abstract

Joshua D. Breyfogle (1806-1868), miner and soldier. The collection contains a journal describing an overland journey from Delaware, Ohio, to the California gold fields 1849-1850, as well as diaries and letters describing Breyfogle's experiences in the 4th Ohio Vol. Infantry and the 10th Ohio Cavalry, during the Civil War.
