Biography

William S. Carter was born circa 1824. He served as postmaster of Quechee, Vermont from 1847-1853, and during and after that time also ran a stage couch line which carried mail as well as freight and passengers. He was also involved in civic affairs of the Town of Hartford, VT, including Civil War recruiting, and served local volunteer organizations including the Congregational Society of Quechee and the Quechee Cemetery Association. In 1858, he became a partner in A.G. Dewey & Co. woolen manufacturers. Carter died in 1873.
