Ralph Butterfield was born March 27, 1818 in Lowell Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1839 after which he became a merchant. He died on September 2, 1892.

The collection contains his autobiography and journal (1850-1892), describing student life at Phillips Exeter Academy, Andover, Mass., and at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., life in Mississippi during the Civil War, and in Kansas City, Mo., as a merchant and realtor from 1869 to 1892 Includes account books, showing investments, cash flow, and some business accounts (1869-1892).
