Biography

Stephen Rand was born in Norwich, Vermont in 1844. He was a member of Dartmouth College Class of 1863 and received his AB in 1879. He became an assistant engineer in the United States Navy, continued his career in the Navy, and retired with the rank of rear admiral in 1911. Rand died in 1915.

Abstract

Stephen Rand (1844-1915), admiral in the US Navy. Dartmouth College Class of 1863. The collection contains Rand's orders to serve on various ships, among them the "U.S.S. Kearsarge," letters of recommendation, and notes with engineer's drawings of machine parts related to ships.

"Do not let the din of war hinder your preparation to meet God." Letter also includes news of Orrin Kimball, Ireneus Gage, Eben Pardee and Henry Caswell.

Eight-page letter from Theodosia Stockbridge in Hanover to Stephen Rand in Pensacola, Florida with news of Hanover. The gymnasium is now in use, the old college bell has been replaced by a new one, a young man's debating club has been formed, sudden death of Mrs. Cobb. "It is only when we are prayerful...that we can 'walk in the light.'"
