Biography

Benjamin Shreve Calef was born on January 26, 1835 in Saco, Maine. He graduated from the English High School in Salem, Massachusetts after which he began his business career as clerk in an importing house in New York City. He enlisted in the 9th Regimen of the New York State Milita in 1861. Calef was promoted to major and assisted in the organization of the three regiments of the Berdan Sharpshooter and afterwards served on the staff of D.B. Birney of the Third Army Corps. Calef was captured on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia and was exchanged in December of that year. After the war, Calef was the general manager of the Eastern department of the Manhattan Life Insurance Company. He died in 1897.

Abstract

Benjamin S. Calef (1835-1897), Civil War soldier and businessman. The collection contains correspondence while serving in the 9th New York Militia and 1st and 2d U.S. Sharpshooters, and as aide-de-camp to Gen Birney, as well as photographs and clippings.
