The collection contains correspondence of Benjamin S. Calef while he served in the 9th New York Militia and 1st and 2d U.S. Sharpshooters, and as aide-de-camp to Gen Birney. Correspondents include Amanda Harris, Alexander Shaler and Truman Seymour. Photographs including a tintype of him in uniform, clippings, a sketch of an invention related to a shell, and a typed abstract of his letters are also included.
