Biography

Matt Bushnell Jones was born in Waitsfield, Vermont on May 15th, 1871. Following his studies at St. Johnsbury Academy, he enrolled in Dartmouth College with the Class of 1894. While at Dartmouth, Jones was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the senior society of Casque and Gauntlet. He also played on the varsity football team for four years. After graduating from Dartmouth with distinction, Jones matriculated at Harvard Law School and received his LL.B. in 1897. Jones worked at Powers, Hall & Jones after gaining admission to the Massachusetts bar, and later became the president of New England Telephone & Telegraph Company in 1919. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Boston and served on the Newton board of aldermen from 1907 to 1911. Jones had a passion for old and rare books and was involved in a number of relevant societies such as American Antiquarian Society, Massachusetts Historical Society, the New England Historic-Genealogical Society, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Club of Odd Volumes in Boston. He died at his home in Newton Center, MA on July 1, 1940.
