Biography

Frank Carleton Doan was born on February 13, 1877 in Nelsonville, Ohio. He attended Hiram College for several years and obtained his PhB degree from Ohio State University in 1898 and his AM degree from Harvard in 1900. That same year he began a four-year professorship in psychology and education at Ohio State University. Harvard granted him his PhD in 1904 and he became Professor of Philosophy and Religion and Systematic Theology at Meadeville Theological College in Meadeville, Pennsylvania. Doan left that position in 1913, accepting a pastorate in Summit, New Jersey. He was ordained an Unitarian minister in 1914 and subsequently held pastorates in Iowa City, Iowa and Rochester, New York. Doan retired from the ministry in 1925 and died in 1927.

Abstract

Frank Carleton Doan (1877-1927), Unitarian Minister. The collection contains correspondence, sermons, printed material writings and journals related to his pacifism and his preaching. Also included are papers relating to his tenure at Meadville Theological Seminary and letters of condolence to Isabel Doan on his death.
