Biography

Arthur R. Moffatt was born in on May 4, 1919 on Long Island. After attending Friends Academy there, he enrolled at Dartmouth College, where he played Freshman lacrosse and was a member of Gamma Delta Chi and the Ledyard Canoe Club. He graduated in 1941 with a degree in Geology. During World War II, Moffatt served as an ambulance driver with the American Field Service. After the war, he married Carol Sengstack and spent two years teaching English at the University of Utah before moving to Norwich, Vermont. Moffatt became a freelance writer, then set up a company, Hudson Bay Trips, to lead young men on canoe trips up the Albany River in Canada. (He himself had traversed the river alone at the age of 18). In 1955, inspired by the writings of J.B. Tyrrell, who had canoed the Dubawnt in 1893, Moffatt led a six-person expedition up the Dubawnt River. He died on September 14, 1955 during the journey when his canoe capsized in the rapids.

Content Description Journal kept by Arthur R. Moffatt (D '41) on a canoe expedition in Canada up the Dubawnt River from Stony Rapids in Saskatchewan to the vicinity of Grant Lake in Nunavut. Moffatt's goals for the journey into this area (known as the Barren Grounds) were to produce a film, to gather information on the area's archaeology and ornithology, and eventually to write a book on the sub-Arctic.
