Arthur R. Moffatt journal
Description
Journal kept by Arthur R. Moffatt (D '41) on a canoe expedition in Canada up the Dubawnt River from Stony Rapids in Saskatchewan to the vicinity of Grant Lake in Nunavut. Moffatt's goals for the journey into this area (known as the Barren Grounds) were to produce a film, to gather information on the area's archaeology and ornithology, and eventually to write a book on the sub-Arctic. He was accompanied by five other men, including Fred "Skip" Pessl (D '55), Edward “Joe” Lanouette (D '57) and Bruce LeFavour (D '57). Moffatt died partway through the trip after his canoe capsized in icy rapids.
The journal begins with a description of travel by train and airplane from White River Junction, Vermont to Stony Rapids. Topics include the landscape; the weather; food; birds; native peoples' campsites; difficult portages; fishing; taking pictures and films; navigating rapids; and hunting caribou. There is a brief description of a treaty ceremony between Canadian government officials and an indigenous group identified as Chipewyan. Pages at the end of the journal contain miscellaneous notes, including on pictures and films taken. There is a printed map of the expedition inserted into the volume.
