Griffith, William Nelson

 

Biography

William Nelson Griffith entered the Royal Navy in 1811. From 1819-1820, he was a midshipman on board the HMS Griper during William Parry's first expedition to the Arctic. From 1821-1823, he served as midshipman on the HMS Hecla during Parry's second expedition. Griffith later served as a lieutenant on the HMS Barreto Junior in 1845, when it provisioned Franklin's expedition. Griffith Point on Melville Island and Griffith Creek in Hecla Strait are named after him.
