Biography
Warren Chamberlain was born in Worcester, MA on July 3, 1896. He graduated from Worcester Academy in 1916. He attended Dartmouth College as a member of the class of 1920 where he roomed with and began a life-long friendship with artist Paul Sample, also class of 1920. As an undergraduate, Chamberlain was captain of the track team. He was president of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity and a member of Dragon. Chamberlain left Dartmouth to serve as a flying instructor at Key West, Florida in 1918 for the US Navy and flew the F-7 Flying Boat during World War I. He returned to graduate from Dartmouth in 1921. Chamberlain married Florabell Ligget of Kansa City, Kansas (Wellesley Class of 1921) on February 26, 1923. After starting a textile factory in Canada, Chamberlain worked in advertising for various magazines and newspapers in New York City, including Stage, Mademoiselle, the New Yorker, and the Herald Tribune. In 1950, Chamberlain moved to Miami Beach where he worked for the Department of Commerce and served as the Federal Area Chairman for the Crusade for Freedom until his retirement. Chamberlain died in Miami Beach, Florida on March 29, 1981.

Warren Chamberlain (1896-1981). Dartmouth Class of 1920 and roommate of artist Paul Sample, ’20. Chamberlain worked as the Federal Area Chairman for the Department of Commerce. The collection consists of Christmas cards from and to the Chamberlain family, personal correspondence between Chamberlain and Sample, and letters from Paul’s wife, Sylvia Sample.
