Biography

John Hale Chipman, a descendant of Nathan Hale, was born on November 15, 1896 in West Somerville, Massachusetts. He enrolled at Dartmouth in 1915 and enlisted in the US army in 1917. Chipman served as an ammunition truck driver in the French Army, drove an ambulance for the American Red Cross, and eventually became a combat officer for the French Foreign Legion. After the war he returned to Dartmouth, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and the Sphinx, and graduated in 1919. Chipman attended Harvard College during the summer of 1919 and Columbia University from 1919-1921. In 1925 Chipman married Mildred Francis Brooks, and in 1931 their daughter Ruth Ellan Chipman was born. He went on to work for Merrill, Lynch Co; General Foods, and Houghton Mifflin, and in 1945 he started his own food brokerage company. Chipman was also a talented musician, and in 1962 he published a book, “Index of Top Hit Tunes 1900-1950.” In 1963 he co-authored “Stone Age Men and Their Music” with Col. Charles Furlong, which was never published, also published several articles about music and archaeology. Chipman died on April 18, 1972 at his home in Norwell, Massachusetts.
