Biography
James Pike was born in 1777, in Somersworth, New Hampshire. He attended a common school, but continued his education by teaching himself, beginning in 1798. Pike taught at several schools including at Wakefied, Newbury, Salisbury, and Charlestown, Massachusetts; Buxton, Berwick and Portland, Maine, as well as in his hometown of Somersworth. Pike also wrote several textbooks. His first, "The Columbian Orthographer", was published in 1806 and his second, "The Little Reader" in 1814. Pike died in 1842, in Somersworth.
