Biography
Roswell Shurtleff was born on August 29, 1773, in Ellington, Connecticut. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1799. From 1800 to 1804, Shurtleff was a tutor at the College, after which he began his study of divinity. After being ordained an evangelist in 1810, Shurtleff became the pastor of the Congregational Church at Dartmouth College, as well as College librarian. He began teaching at the College as professor of moral philosophy and political economy in 1827, a position he held until 1838, when he became professor emeritus. Shurtleff died on February 4, 1861, in Hanover, NH.
