Biography

David McClure was born on November 18, 1748 in Newport, Rhode Island. At the age of fifteen he was sent to Dr. Wheelock's school in Lebanon, Connecticut to prepare to become a missionary to the Indians. In 1765, he entered Yale College and graduated in 1769. After graduation, McClure took charge of Moor's Charity School in Lebanon, Connecticut. In 1770, he moved with the school to Hanover, NH, where he was head of school and tutor in Dartmouth College. In May 1772, he was ordained to go as missionaries to the Delaware Indians in Ohio but returned to New Hampshire in 1773. In 1776, McClure was installed pastor of the church at North Hampton. In 1777, he became a trustee of Dartmouth College and in 1800 received an honorary doctorate from the College. McClure died on June 25, 1820.
