Biography
Edward Cowles was born on July 20, 1837 in Rygate, Vermont. He gradutated from Dartmouth Class in 1859 and received his AM in 1861. He attended medical school at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and obtained his M.D. in 1863. He served a few months at the Hartford Retreat in Connecticut and then entered the U.S. Army until 1872. Following the Civil War, he was in charge of an Army hospital.Returning to Boston in 1872, he became Superintendent of the Boston City Hospital for seven years. n 1879, he was invited to take the post of Superintendent of the McLean Asylum, where he remained until 1903. Cowles died on July 25, 1919.

Luther W. Emerson letters concerning Dartmouth College
Luther W. Emerson (1838-1925), lawyer. Dartmouth College Class of 1862. The collection contains letters to Edward Cowles regarding the memorial plaque in honor of the students and graduates of Dartmouth College who died in the Civil War, with mock-up of the plaque as well as two letters from Edward Tuck to Emerson regarding 50th reunion activities. Two photographs of Tuck are also included.
