Biography

Maria Magdalena of Austria was a German princess of imperial descent. She was the daughter of Archduke Charles of Austria and Styria and Mary of Bavaria. Maria Magdalena was exceptionally well educated and showed considerable interest in contemporary art and the intellectual movement known as humanism. She married Grand Duke Cosimo II de Medici. Maria and Cosimo had eight surviving children in their twelve years of marriage, four sons and four daughters. Cosimo died in 1620 and Maria in 1631.

Scope and Contents Manuscript book of hours belonging originally to Maria Magdalena, Duchess of Tuscany, made in Florence, Italy. Text in Latin on vellum with three leaves of German prayers on paper appended. Includes 34 hand-painted miniatures, three pen drawings, and two relics. Folio 34 is a pen and ink drawing of the crucifixion, signed Johan Wiericz. Several miniatures have inscriptions on verso from members of the Hapsburg royal family.
