Biography

Stephen Harvard (1948-1988), Dartmouth College Class of 1970. Calligrapher, illustrator, book designer, type designer and graphic designer. Studying under Ray Nash at Dartmouth, Harvard’s passion for the arts of letters and bookmaking was acknowledged with a grant from the American Friends of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, where he traveled to study engraving and punchcutting with Sam Hartz and stone cutting with Will Carter. After graduating Harvard worked as a stone letter cutter for the John Stevens Shop in Rhode Island before joining Meriden-Stinehour Press as a book designer, calligrapher, and illustrator. In 1987, he began using the Macintosh computer in his type design and became a member of Adobe System’s Type Advisory Board, through which he promoted the use of computers in typography and adapted some of his own type faces for electronic uses. Harvard died by suicide in 1988.
