Biography
Edward Mitchell was born on January 27, 1794 on Martinique to a "frenchman" and a mixed race mother. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1828 after which he became a baptist minister. He died on March 21, 1872 in Magog Que, Canada. Mitchell was the first person of African descent to graduate from Dartmouth as well as the first person of color to graduate from schools that would later constitute the Ivy League.

Edward Mitchell papers
Grouping of manuscript documents entitled: "Observations on Religious Subjects." Wrapped in a paper folio, the contents, numbering nearly 70 pages with some sections individually titled, contain excerpts, notes, drafts for sermons, and one letter draft from the Reverend Edward Mitchell to a Br. Kimball. Portions of the folio are side-stabbed bound. Most of the documents appear to be from the early years of Mitchell's religious education.
