Biography

Frank Maloy Anderson was born on February 3, 1871 in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Minnesota. FMA received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1894 and completed his A.M. there in 1896. He tought at the University of Minnesota for nineteen years beginning in 1898. That same year, he married Mary G. Steele. They had two sons: Troyer S. Anderson, born on April 28, 1900, and Dr. Gaylord W. Anderson, born on December 31,1901. FMA started teaching at Dartmouth College in 1914 and was later made an honorary member of the class of 1914. FMA taught at Dartmouth for 27 years until 1941, two years after his wife passed away. In 1944, FMA married Mary Maud Case from Wellesley, Mass. His eldest son died four years later. The University of Minnesota honored FMA on May 22, 1953 with one of their Outstanding Achievement Awards. FMA passed away on April 26, 1961 in St. Paul, Minnesota at the age of 90. During his time at Dartmouth, FMA traveled to Paris with President Wilson as a member of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace. He helped to draft the statute for the International Labor Organization. While there, FMA taught at the American Military University at Beaure, France. FMA wrote several books, including “The Mystery of a ‘Public Man’” (1948), “Handbook of the Diplomatic History of Europe, Asia, and Africa, 1870-1914” (1918), and “The Constitution and Other Select Documents Illustrative of the History of France, 1789-1901” (1904). He was a joint editor for “Outlines and Documents of English Constitutional History During the Middle Ages (1895).
