The Lord Family papers contain both professional and family correspondence, sermons, notebooks, diaries, manuscripts, typescripts, land deeds, financial records, legal papers, memorandum, hymnals, reports, booklets, photographs, maps, blueprints, programs, poetry, recipes, drawings, articles, scrapbooks, locks of hair, memento mori, biographical information, genealogical charts, family histories and clippings. The papers are representative of four generations of the Lord family but primarily document Nathan Lord, sixth president of Dartmouth College, his wife, Elizabeth King Lord their children and grandchildren. The materials document both the professional and personal lives of the Lord family and their connection to Dartmouth College and the town of Hanover, NH. The collection also contains extensive genealogical research, family histories and typescripts on Nathan Lord’s early ancestors, descendants and affiliated families compiled by Jeannette Mather Lord and her husband, Frederick P. Lord. Of note are Nathan Lord’s manuscripts and sermons on slavery as well as correspondence and materials related to his resignation as president of Dartmouth College due to the controversy surrounding his pro slavery beliefs.
