Hugh Morrison papers

The papers of Hugh S. Morrison contains final typescript draft of material for his book, "Louis Sullivan: Prophet of Modern Architecture" (published as: "Louis Sullivan, Prophet of Modern Architecture". New York: The Museum of Modern Art and W.W. Norton. [c1935]); 4 notebooks with drafts for chapters 1-4, 5-8, 9-13, and 14-17 of his book, "American Architecture: The Colonial and Georgian Periods" (published as: "Early American Architecture from the first Colonial Settlements to the National Period" (New York: Oxford University press. c1952); 1 notebook with work prints for the section on colonial architecture from "EAA"; a set of illustrations for "EAA"; and a notebook with a general index for the book. Also includes notebook with photographs and manuscript notes for the book, "Early Houses of Norwich, Vermont (published as: "Early Houses of Norwich, Vermont" [by] Philip Aylwin White [and] Dana Doane Johnson, edited by Hugh S. Morrison. Hanover, N.H., Dartmouth College. c1938). Also includes 1 notebook of general correspondence and 2 notebooks with correspondence regarding requests for photographs and permissions to publish.

A 1999 accession includes correspondence; notes, slide lists, lecture notes and other Dartmouth College course materials as well as photographs and scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, drafts of Morrision's writings and illustrations for his books.

The papers document Morrison’s personal life and professional career, including his involvement with the Early Sites Foundation, his teaching career at Dartmouth College in the Geography, Art, and Archaeology departments, and his authorship of different books and notes on various architects.

Of note is a complete collection of his letters from Dartmouth, freshman through senior year. Also interesting are extensive documents regarding the Early Sites Foundation, and a rough copy of "The History of Art" written by Morrison. There are also documents relating to the lecture series “Great Issues” which Morrison helped organize, which was originally slated to have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak (1960).
