John Gerould papers
Description
The papers of John Hiram Gerould contain personal and professional correspondence; accounts and receipts; notebooks, sketchbooks; manuscripts, lectures; photographs and negatives; and other writings.
The collection is arranged in five series: Correspondence, Statements of Account and Receipts, Notebooks, Writings, and Photographs. Correspondence contains letters to his family while traveling abroad and during the summer while on research trips; a collection of note cards listing contacts as well as correspondence between Gerould and William Hovanitz concerning Colias butterfly genetics. The accounts and receipts contain forms which record details of Gerould's tuition costs and other fees while a student at Dartmouth. The notebooks contain lecture notes, as well as notes on his experiments from his time at Dartmouth and Harvard. The writing series contains manuscripts of Gerould's published articles and chapters concerning heredity, genetics and biology. Photographs contains two photographs of Gerould’s professional contemporaries, a number of travel photographs and negatives from Brittany in the 1890s as well as negatives and prints of insect anatomy.
