Francis Brown letters
Description
Letters from Francis Brown to Israel W.Putnam, written by Brown during his presidency of Dartmouth College, to Putnam, a Dartmouth graduate and minister in Portsmouth, N.H. Some letters provide information about the progression of events during the Dartmouth College case. In one letter Brown informs Putnam that Daniel Webster will represent the College, while in another he asks Putnam for assistance in raising money for the legal fees. Other topics include Brown's request to distribute a theological pamphlet, the offer of the presidency of Hamilton College to Brown, and the suicide of Rev. Isaiah Potter, of Lebanon, N.H.
