Hanover (N.H.: Town) records
Description
The Town of Hanover's archival records held in the Dartmouth College Archives span the years between 1761 and 1995. The bulk of the records occur between 1800 and 1970, and chiefly are comprised of record books; account books; minutes; birth, death, and marriage certificates; highway surveys; tax warrants; and tax inventories. Other types of records include annual reports, maps, plans, deeds, architectural and engineering drawings, clippings and printed matter, memoranda, and correspondence. The earliest records, including the colonial proprietors' maps, charter, and record books, document the establishment of Hanover. Other colonial period and late eighteenth century documents include vital records, highway surveys, correspondence, and town meeting minutes. Nineteenth century records include annual reports, account books, voter checklists, and tax inventories. Poor relief, the town farm, and school funding are among the aspects of Hanover's nineteenth century social and economic history depicted in account books, minutes, tax inventories, property schedules, and affidavits. Other records of interest dating from the 1800s include militia rosters, Village Precinct records, and the record books of the town liquor agent. Records dating from the twentieth century include memoranda, reports, and correspondence pertaining to town planning, zoning, and public education. Various records, especially town meeting minutes and town planning materials, provide insights on the relationship between the Town and Dartmouth College. Throughout the collection, researchers will find that the above records pertain to the history of New Hampshire and the Connecticut River Valley, as well as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the War of 1812, and the Depression, among other topics.
