Abstract

Diary of John Charters, seaman aboard the H.M.S. Enterprise. Details the search expedition for the H.M.S. Erebus and the H.M.S. Terror, two ships led by Sir John Franklin that were lost in ice searching for a northwest passage to the Pacific. Charters describes events on board including a man overboard, attempts to contact the crews of of the Erebus and Terror though the use of collared foxes, fraternizing with Inuit people, and navigating icebergs.

Scope and Contents This Buddho-Taoist codex consists of two works: the first contains rituals with detailed illustrations of mudras and ends with 21 chapters of chants and illustrations of wheels of heavenly and earthly lanterns, the second, in a different hand, contains sutras for the soul's transcendence and includes an illustration of 8 bagua trigrams and a river chart and luo writings. Modifications and references to individuals indicate that these rituals were probably copied for a specific person's death...

John W. Danenhower (1849-1887), Navy officer and arctic explorer. The collection contains correspondence, photographs, diaries, journals, clippings, an account book and other financial documents, a photo album and a scrapbook related to Danehhower's life and his time on-board the USS Jeanette during its search for a Pacific route to the North Pole. Manuscripts and research related to the book “Life’s Wild Restless Sea,” by his grandson Geoffrey Wilson are also included.
