"Indian Symbol" - Articles 1990's - 2000's
Description
This file is comprised largely of news articles, with a small amount of correspondence, dating from 1990 to 2006. Many of the articles document a broad national debate about Indigenous Americans as mascots, and touch on the case of Dartmouth's "Indian symbol" only briefly. Topics include the continued support for the use of the symbol that came from The Dartmouth Review, from the Conservative Union at Dartmouth, and from some alumni. Of note is a... 1990 statement from a campus group explaining its decision to distribute “Dartmouth whites” t-shirts in protest of use of the “Indian symbol,” as well as a 2006 letter to students from Dartmouth President James Write regarding racism toward Indigenous people on campus. Stereotypical images of Indigenous people are present.
