"Indian Symbol" - Policy Statements
Description
Contains memos, reports, press releases, and other material dating from ca. 1954 to 2000 about the use of the Dartmouth "Indian Symbol." Of particular note are copies of the 1971 "Policy Statement from Native Americans at Dartmouth on the Dartmouth 'indian' Symbol and Recommendations" by the student group Native Americans at Dartmouth. The report outlines their objections to the symbol as a racist caricature and calls on the Dartmouth community to cease its use of the symbol and other stereotypical images and language referring to Indigenous people.
